Recently, I’ve been needing to do a serious amount of cross–browser testing for the current freelance gig. The options available:
- Use an old version of XP via Parallels whilst running Mac OS X
- Boot into Windows 7 via BootCamp
- Get off my arse and hook up the PC that’s been sat under my desk for about six months
I tried hard to use Parallels, but it was just too demanding of my MacBook and caused too many hard reboots. Windows via BootCamp wouldn’t work because all the site files I needed to test were on the Mac OS X partition and needed running via Mac OS X. That left the final option, so I set about that today.
First of all, we were a screen short. Secondly, it was void of wireless capabilities, and we had no way of getting ethernet cable from the back of downstairs to the front of upstairs. A quick trip to PC World would fix both, I thought. Scored a nice 22“ HP screen and a Belkin Powerline kit.
As I was paying, The Missus wanders over to check out the iPads. Gah, what the hell, we got one of those as well. A fairly expensive method of cross–browser testing, I think you’ll agree.
I’m impressed so far, I have to say. The first App I installed was Korg’s iElectribe. Blimey, that’ll provide endless amusement. My brother, Simon, would’ve killed to have had something like that, back in the day.
All in all, a busy day of buying, configuring, hair–pulling, tapping, smiling, and now compiling and testing.
Perfect Geek weekend.
